It was the only way they could have fit all 12 engines on board. The wing was too thick to fit the pusher engines, plus its much easier(or time efficient I guess) to change an engine when it’s just sitting out in the open like that.

Plus it seems like mounting the engines as far from the water as possible just makes a lot of sense. It is still even done on some modern seaplanes.

Funnily enough, both of those planes are made by the same manufacturer, Dornier.

Pretty smart idea on a flying boat. Keep those engines protected from salt-water as much as possible.
